BATTLEGROUND RULES AND REGULATIONS:

This guide contains essential details regarding scoring, prohibited techniques, time limits, and safety measures. Battleground strives to provide competitors with a healthy, fair, and secure environment. Enjoy the competition and thank you for participating in Battleground.

TIME PERIODS:

(Kids) Elementary, Middle School - 4-minute period commencing from a standing position.

HIGH SCHOOL, ADULTS, MEN AND WOMEN - 5-minute period commencing from a standing position

Positional controlled point system:

  • Takedown to guard = 2pt and go behinds 2pts *
  • Takedown and back take = 2pt
  • Sweep = 2pts
  • Reversal to side Guard = 2pts
  • Back take with hooks or figure fore = 4pts
  • Mount = 4 pts
  • Guard Pass = 3 pts
  • Knee on Belly = 2pts
  • In the event of a submission attempt from knee on belly resulting in a position reversal, the reversal will not be counted.
  • Technical superiority winner = 12+ points

TIE SCORE AT THE END OF REGULATION:

If a match concludes without submissions or points awarded, advantage points serve as a tiebreaker. Advantage points are awarded to competitors who attempt and secure technical submission positions without scoring or submitting their opponent. For instance, if a position is achieved but not held for three seconds. It is crucial to note that advantage points are only applicable in the case of a tied score. Even if your opponent has multiple advantages, earning just one advantage point can lead to victory.

TAKEDOWNS:

In Battleground 2 Point takedowns are awarded to a competitor when he or she takes their opponent down to the mat from the standing neutral position. Takedowns are awarded when the referee confirms control by a competitor taking his/her opponent from the standing position to the mat in a controlled top position or to the guard. All takedowns are legal except dropping an opponent on their head intentionally. The intentional slam will result in immediate disqualification.

DOMINANT POSITION CONTROL:

In Battleground, 2 points are awarded to a competitor for maintaining various top control positions that offer common submission opportunities, such as Side Mount, North-South, Knee on Belly, Scarf Hold, Modified Scarf Hold, Top Turtle control, Mount, and Back Grab positions. Points for consecutive control are only given when transitioning from Side Control to Knee on Belly/Mount/Back Grab, not from one form of Side Control to another.

SWEEPS & REVERSALS:

In Battleground, a competitor earns 2 points for initiating a Sweep from any Guard position and moving from the bottom to a top position. If the Sweep leads to Side Control or Mount, an additional 2 points are awarded for Dominant Control. Reversals also garner 2 points; for instance, transitioning from Bottom Mount to "In Guard" yields no points, whereas moving from bottom Side Control to top Side Control results in 2 points for achieving dominant control through the reversal.

Kids & Teens No Gi Legal / Prohibited Techniques:

ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES: NOVICE/ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HS DIVISIONS:

In the Novice/ELEMENTARY and Kids Divisions, submissions are not allowed, and a referee will intervene to assess dangerous situations and determine the winner based on control and dominance rather than submissions.

Illegal techniques include all forms of neck cranks, the No-Gi Ezekiel choke, wrist locks, bicep and calf compressions, body compressions used for submissions, slamming, guard passes resembling the Boston crab style, twisting or reaping ankle/leg locks, windpipe compression with the hand, the "electric chair" technique, and spine locks. All No-Gi chokes must involve the opponent's arm inside the choke, except for Guillotines, rear naked chokes, forearm chokes, and gogoplatas. Straight ankle locks and straight knee bars are prohibited in Battleground Teen No-Gi and Gi competitions.

BATTLEGROUND: NO-GI LEGAL / PROHIBITED TECHNIQUES:

Heel hooks are not permitted for beginners but are allowed for Intermediate and Expert levels. Practitioners at all skill levels can apply most other submission techniques. Illegal moves include slamming, manipulating fingers or toes, and compressing the windpipe with the hand.
